johnny's Gun 6

joe starts tapping his head because it is the only way he thinks he can communicate. he tries using morris code to communicate with people around him. at first the nurse doesn't know what he is doing, she never really figures it out yet. in the end of the chapter she is a little closer to figuring it out, but she assumes too much. all he wants to do is have contact with the outside world. all he wants to do is communicate with someone. she mistakes this as discomfort, at first.  after she does everything she can think of and he is still tapping she tries something new. lastly, she mistakes his tapping for a need of sexual expression. when he realizes what she is doing he is disgusted, he didn't want her to do anything like that. all he wanted to do was to communicate with some one.
he has been laying there almost lifeless for years, he is outraged that she mistook his need for basic communication for a sexual need.

johnny's Gun 5

he decides to try and master the time because he has nothing else to do. the first time he attempts this he doesn't prevail because he cant keep track of time for very long. he cant keep his mind focused for long enough. the next time he attempts he is much more successful. he sticks with it and "times" his nurses. he figures out that he is getting treated every 2 hours, by the same nurse during the day. he is treated by different nurses at night. he figures out using the temperatures when it is night and day. i thought this was very interesting, because this is what they say when some one goes deaf and their eye sight gets better. because the only sense he has left is his touch so all his other senses are getting amazing.

johnny's Gun 4

Joe thinks that people he cares about are worth fighting for.  he does not think that fighting for people he doesn't know is worth dying for. as he is laying there on the bed in the breathing machine he cant stop thinking about what is worth fighting for. he decides that Kareen is worth dying for. and even bigger he decides that people he knows and cares for are worth fighting over. he keeps thinking that he doesn't want to die for a fight that isn't his, and people that he doesnt know.

johnny's Gun 3

while the rat could be completely true, we do not know if it is true of not. it doesn't really matter if the rat is real or not. it is almost worse if the rat is in his mind, it is messing with his mind. he thinks about when he saw the dead man being eaten by rats. this rings back bad memories of war. he starts thinking about how rats are the real enemies of war. they dont pick sides, they just eat off the dead body's flesh. this is important because it shows how he cant decide weather he is awake of asleep, he cant figure out is he is dreaming about it or if it is actually real. this causes him to think really hard about it, making him go crazy he is thinking about it so much.

johnny's Gun 2

Joe remembers working at the bakery because he has slipped out of consciousness again. he is "dreaming" about this because it was something he did before he was injured. he is upset about loosing his arm he cant stop thinking about Kareen. he thinks about jose because jose was an influential from his past. he was homeless, and he got a job with joe. when he was ready to move on and get a better job they wouldn't let him. so he did something to get him fired. he knocked over a stack of pies, he was fired over this. joe was thinking about jose because he admired his actions, he admired him for sticking up for what he wanted and not giving in to injustices. just because he was homeless doesn't mean that they can force him to stay at the bakery. i think he dreams of this because of Kareen. i think in his mind he is thinking that he doesnt have to have arms to love her and he wishes the thinks the same way that he does.

Johnny's Gun 1

his situation is war, likely a major war like WWI or WWII. he was in a major battle, and during this battle he was severely injured. there was an explosion near him, it caused him major hearing loss and knocked him out. other than this his body was severely charred, mainly his arms. he imagines he is drowning for a few reasons, he was knocked out and he woke up delirious. other than that it was because of the pain the doctors were putting him through. it made him want to drown, because they were removing his left arm. he didn't want to go through the rest of his life without a left arm, so he imagined he was drowning.

13-14

ester is trying to kill herself because she doesnt know her place in the world or in her surroundings. this is hard for her because all she wants to do is fit in somewhere. she attempts to end her life a few different ways. she ends up using sleeping pills. she takes too many and wakes up in the hospital. the doctors arnt very nice to her, probably because she refuses to accept what they are doing to her. she doesnt like them, she judges them like she does dr. gordon. her mom still thinks she is not sick, personally i think her mom has issues.

11-12

i do not think that Ester trusts Dr. Gordon because he isnt like most doctors. and he has a family. this is important to ester because upon meeting him and finding this out she feels that she cant trust him anymore. he is too good looking for her to trust him, because she has had bad experiences with good looking men. she thinks about the guard and wishes she had just married him so that she could have that perfect family. she just wants to fit in. and she wants to know whats wrong with her. Dr. Gordon isnt helping her because he wont tell her what is wrong. all she wants to do is to figure out what her problems are, and let him fix them. now she doesnt trust him, and he isnt helping her with her problems.

9-10

before she returnees to boston, Esther goes out with Doreen one last time. Lenny's friend marco attempts to rape Esther. this is a traumatic event for her, she then goes back to her hotel and discards her clothes.
when she makes it to boston she is still traumatized by her attempted rape. she stays around her house for a long time doing meaningless tasks and talking to her friends on the phone.
what happend with marco effected her greatly, she was afraid, and it upset her alot. it made her think about where she was going in life, because the diamond was taken from her.

7-8

ester is confused about her place in life. she categorizes people by having sex and not having sex. she wants to be in the sex category, but she doesnt want to do it with buddy. because ever sinse buddy tells her about the waitress she feels that he is above her and she wants to be on a livel page with him. she doesnt like him anymore, she doenst want to marry him like she used to. she sees constantine as a person who can help her with this. she wants to have sex with him very badly, but in the end she realizes that he is a much better man than that and he lays down and falls asleep with her.

3-4

  • How does Esther avoid Chemistry in college?  Why might she find science so overwhelming?
she sits in on the class, she asks to learn the information by sitting in on the class but she doesn't want to get a grade for it. she wants to be exempt from needing her third science credit. she makes her teacher think that she wants to learn chemistry for the good of learning chemistry. she could find science overwhelming for a few different reasons. one because her school requires three years of it so she already took two, and another reason because she was a good writer and never really understood science.

movie post one

to me the content of this movie depicted the 1950's very well. the home economics classes, the cultural ideas, and the actions of all the people in this film was accurate to the time period. the only problem i had with it wasn't content related. i found that i had to keep reminding myself that this took place in the 1950's because to me it seemed too much like it was set in the present day with old time ideas. maybe it was because it was in color or maybe it was because all the actresses have played roles in modern movies.

i thought the content depicted the time period very well.

9-11

in the end of the play they call the doctor on Blanche because stella finally sees that she is losing her mind. when stella calls the doctor she thinks that she is doing the right thing but when they are hauling Blanche out the door stella thinks that she has done the wrong thing. i think that she did the right thing, i think that if Blanche stayed with them the situation would have gotten a lot worse. i think that she would have made stanley so made that he would have done it again, or possibly something even worse. i think stella did the right thing by giving Blanche over to the doctors because it is not only just to make Stella's life easier, but it is for Blanche's own good too.

6-8

in these last scenes stanley reveals some very intimate details about Blanche. he has two friends that know her, they tell him the real truth about her. they tell him how she stays at the flamingo and about how she isn't as proper as she makes herself sound.  stanley makes a big deal out of this, only because Blanche made a huge deal out of stanley being common. when she first met him she was talking to stella about how he isn't suitable for her and how he is an animal. stanley tells mitch because they are friends and he feels like he is looking out for him. i dont think stanley did this just to upset blanche. he did it as a favor to mitch because he was a loyal friend.

Friday, March 20, 2009

4-5

Blanche disapproves of stanley because she thinks he is "common" she thinks that he is an animal. she doesn't like the fact that he gets drunk and gets angry/aggressive. she thinks stella is in this relationship for all of the wrong reasons and that it wont last. she resents stanley because she thinks that he will inevitably hurt stella. she also disapproves of him because he is starting to reveal what she actually is. he is chipping away at her facade of this high class southern woman.

2-3

in scene 2-3 we see more of Stanley's aggression. in scene 1 he isn't very aggressive it is hinted at that he may have aggressive tendencies but they are not shown. in scene 2-3 he gets mad at the women because they have the radio on and he throws it out the window. we also see how atracted stella is so him, and his animalistic characteristics. Blanche wants to save her and take her away, but stella is too attracted to Stanley.

essay

i will contrast willy and norma, telling how they are similar and different. using Hughes poem i will relate norma and willy's lives. i will use notes in my book and notes on the movie. then compare the play and the movie alike, to Hughes poem.

Willy/Norma

they are both living in the past they are living in made up worlds that their dreams have created. they are afraid of submitting to the more modern way of life. because of this they are stuck living in the past, their memories rule them. and because their memories rule them they need some one to take care of their life in the now. they need someone to look after them because if their dream lives fall apart then its like their world is falling apart. they are both mentally unstable, not only because of the alternate reality, but because they are capable of doing them selves terrible harm with out knowing the real reason, because the reason lies with in the gap between their alternate and true realities.

salesmen 5

i think that willy made the wrong choice refusing charlie's help. i think the is just way too proud to take it. and he is too jealous of charlie, he always has been. because of his flashbacks and because he lies about the past he thinks he used to be a much better salesman than he actually was and because of this he cant bring himself to takes charlies help. one of willy's flaws is that he is too proud to accept help or to take advice, or to even listen to someone elses interpretation of somthing. i think willy needs to wake up and see reality, he needs to accept the fact thathe isnt the best, he isnt all that well liked, and he needs help.

salesmen 4

ben offers willy a job in alaska in diamonds. he isnt the best influence on willy, but he does offer him and he needs a good job. ben is kind of a bad influence on willy because he wants him to go to alaska away from the house that his family grew up together in. linda doesnt like ben because she thinks willy can make it fine in there, and he doenst need to go to alaska to make money.

salesman 3

i think that biff and happy's plan will work. they want to open a sporting goods store, i think it will work because they have a good plan. their father gives them all kinds of advice on how to go about starting it and how to dress and how to talk to people. they get this idea because linda tells them that the fact that nether of them have stable lives is killing willy. i think the boys will be successful because their fathers life is on the line, it was soothing like this that they needed to force them to work, because they didnt really want to so they needed something to force them to try and get a successful job.

salesman 1

happy and biff are two well built men in their mid 30's. they are home for a little bit. biff is kind of a wanderer, he doesnt get payed a lot and he cant keep a job very long. he is a free spirit and just wants to have a job out side. his brother happy, has a job, is well-liked and has a nice place to live. he is lonely, he wants some one to be with he isnt happy going through women any more. i dont think they are reliable becase nether one is really all that stable, it kind of seems liek they could go off at any moment. happy is a little more stable than biff though.

janie doesnt talk very much in the trial because she feels like her soul has died alone with tea cake. and the second reason she doesnt care how the trial turns out, because she has died inside. the only reason she finally speaks is because she wants people to know the truth about her and tea cake. she wants every one to know that their love was strong and mutual. and she had been looking through the whole book for the perfect lover who would lover her back. it turns out that tea cake was the love of her life because they respected each other and had a mutual love for each other, up until the end when tea cake got sick from the mad dog.

16-18

in the end of the reading for tonight there is a hurricane that comes and janie stays on the muck with tea cake. during the storm they stay in the quarters with motor boat, another man who stayed through the storm. the line "their eyes were watching god" means that they were afraid for their lives because the storm was so bad, and they equated the storm to an angry god. they were watching the storm so then they were watching god. they finally decide that it is important for them to leave and so they try and make it through all the water but cant and r forced to grad debris and then tea cake gets bitten by the dog trying to protect janie.

13 - 15

when janie starts to trust tea cake, and when he starts missing some work to be with her se comes up with an idea. she is going to work with him. she does this because one she wants to be with him and two because they have a mutual relationship so she feels that she has a place with him. it is different from working with logan and jody because there is a mutual desire in her working. not just because she needs to work, because she doesn't, but because she wants to be with him. it is her choice to work that is the major difference.

7-9

in this part of our reading the reference to the angels was symbolism for janie and her relationship with jody. in one way Janie is the little pieces and the mud is symbolism for jody keeping her beauty and elegance away from everyone so she would be only his. and in another way janie is still the little parts but the mud is her relationship with jody and how it isnt close to how she thought it would be and now she is just right back where she was before, she is just as unhappy with him, because he wont let her shine.

Janie likes the mule for two reasons, one because all of the men talk about it and she goes out to listen to their stories, and two i think it reminds her of her self. when she goes out to listen to the men talk then she can get away from doing math in the store and selling things. she enjoys listening to their stories because they are interesting and they are a distraction from Joe forcing her to work in the store. and the mule reminds her of herself because it is being forced to work like she was with logan and like she is with joe. also because it is being starved and she feels like Logan's oppression over her is starving her from having an ideal life.

Jody makes himself major of Eatonville, because they didnt have one and he felt like he should be the person to step up as major. and once he was major he was making all these decisions for the town and lobbying for it, persuading people to come live there. he called meetings and he bought street lamps, he bought himself a huge wooden desk and a swivel chair. he thought that he was sooo important.
the irony is that he came to this town so that all the blacks could live together equaly, and as soon as he gets there he puts himself above them all by making himself major.

3-4

The last paragraph in this chapter signifies that she is starting a new life with joe and how she thinks that it is going to be better than it actually, that is signified by the sun-rising. and the fact that life isn't going to be as good as she thinks it will be, that is signified by the setting sun.
it means that she is falling for the same think, when she married logan she thought that life would be better and she kept waiting for it to get better, it never did. she is now going through the same thing with joe.

chapter 1-2

when she returns from her journey the other women dont think very highly of her, they think she looks dirty and they disapprove of her actions. the men dont think very highly of her ether, although they do find her attractive. the women think that it was rude for her to come back and not talk to them.
when she was little she played with all the white children and she didnt know that she was any different from them. i thought it was similar to returning from her journey because she seemed to always b talked about by those other women and when she was little she was always punished, and when people talk about things behind your back it can feel like a punishment. even if u didnt do anything wrong.
